Regularly check your First-aid Kit. Many items, especially sterile ones, have expiry dates. Replace any expired items and dispose of them safely.
1. Periodic inspection
Frequency: Inspect the kit every 3 to 6 months.
Items to check: Look for expired medicines, damaged supplies and items that need refilling.
2. Clean the kit
Container: Wipe down the inside and outside of the kit with a disinfectant.
Contents: Remove items and clean surfaces with a mild soap solution. Avoid using harsh chemicals that may damage the contents.
3. Replace expired items
Medication: Throw away all expired medications and replace them with new ones.
Bandages and dressings: Check expiration dates and replace as necessary.
4. Replenish supplies
Common items: Make sure you have enough of essential items such as adhesive bandages, gauze pads, antiseptic wipes and scissors.
Specialist items: Depending on your needs, consider adding items such as allergy medication, burn cream or a CPR mask.
5. Organize the contents
Categories: Group similar items together (e.g. bandages, antiseptics, medicines) for easy access.
Labeling: Use labels or colour-coded sections to quickly identify supplies.
6. Store properly
Location: Store the kit in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
Accessibility: Ensure it's within easy reach of all household members, but out of the reach of small children.
7. Educate users
Training: Familiarize everyone who might use the kit with its contents and how to use it.
Updates: Regularly discuss any changes or new items added to the kit.
