1. Product Specification of Laryngeal Mask Airway
Laryngeal Mask Airways are used in anesthesia and in emergency medicine for airway management. They consist of a tube with an inflatable cuff that is inserted into the pharynx. They cause less pain and coughing than an Endotracheal Tube, and are much easier to insert. However, a standard Laryngeal Mask Device does not protect the lungs from aspiration, making them unsuitable for patients at risk for this complication. It is a type of supraglottic airway device that provides an alternative to endotracheal intubation and standard mask anaesthesia in general anaesthesia. It is inserted into the hypopharynx to from a seal around the larynx to allow spontaneous or positive pressure ventilation without the need for intubating the larynx. The main use of Laryngeal Mask Device is in elective anaesthesia, however it is also useful in situations where mainpulation of the head or neck to facilitate ndotracheal intubation is difficult (eg: trapped patient or potential cervical spine injury) or when intubation is unsuccessful. It is not inserted as far as an Endotracheal Tube (it sits in the pharynx, and thus does not need to be inserted into the trachea),and supports both spontaneous and artificial ventilation. It is popular in day case surgery.

4. Direction for use of Laryngeal Mask Airway
● Test inflate cuff prior to use.
● Deflate cuff before intubation.
● The index finger is placed at the junction of the cuff and the tube.
● With the head extended and the neck flexed, carefully flatten the Laryngeal Mask Device tip against the hard palate.
● To facilitate Laryngeal Mask Device introduction into the oral cavity, gently press the middle finger down on the jaw.
● The index finger pushes the Laryngeal Mask Device in a cranial direction following the contours of the hard and soft palates.
● Maintaining pressure with the finger on the tube in the cranial direction, advance the mask until definite resistance is felt at the base of the hypopharynx. Note the flexion of the wrist.
● Inflate the cuff with enough air to obtain an airway at 18-20 cm H2O.Do not exceed the maximum volume recommended for the cuff.
● Finally, secure the tube, suggest inserting a bite block, and attach the tube to the ventilation equipment.
● Gently maintain cranial pressure with the non-dominant hand while removing the index finger.
● Inflation without holding the allows the mask to seal itself optimally.
