4. Direction for use of Polyurethane Nasogastric Tube
1. With the patient supine, aspirate any oral secretions. Take the feeding tube and measure its insertion length. (There are two measurements: the first is the distance from the forehead to the sternum xiphoid process at the hairline; the second is the distance from the tip of the nose to the earlobe to the sternum xiphoid process. This distance for an adult is about 45 to 55 cm. ) Lubricate the front of the feeding tube with paraffin oil.
2. A feeding tube is inserted into the patient's mouth, and the patient is allowed to swallow slowly as the tube passes through the pharynx. The tube will then smoothly pass through the esophagus and into the stomach.
3. Feeding tube fixation: Use a tube holder to hold the feeding tube in place; secure it with the tube holder to the patient's cheek with a long tape.
